The Past

Recycling demolition materials has been considered a dirty job and not as profitable as the job of actually demolishing the structure. It wasn’t always easy to just plonk a Jaw Crusher on the site and run it effectively while getting on with the task at hand.

The majority of demolition materials are sent to the landfill rather than being reused in another civil engineering project.

According to previous and recent reports by the OECD Environmental Performance Review, New Zealand is the most wasteful country in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). Only 28% of our total waste is recovered, and it’s estimated that over half of our waste is construction and demolition materials, mainly concrete and rubble.

The Present

Opportunity is rich for those willing to seize it. European countries have been recycling their  demolition materials with proven success for the past few decades.

Taking the recycled product and turning it into road base course, high-rise building bases and more with highly successful results. Now the majority of demolition projects in developed countries involve the recovery of materials for reuse with developers contracting the firm that can provide this service.

The appetite for a circular aggregate supply makes sense to companies with the ability to demolish and recycle materials, adding a valuable capability and revenue stream. For a developer, a demolition contractor’s ability to not only remove the old structure but turn it into high-quality in-spec aggregates to use straight away shouldn’t be underestimated.
