The Hitachi ZX140W-5B wheeled excavator is perfect for a wide range of applications, including roading projects, says CablePrice. Pulman Earthmoving have been involved with roading projects in the Auckland, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty regions for around three years now, and owner Dan Pulman—who’s been in the industry for 25 years—says he’s always favoured wheeled excavators for his roading work.

There were several unique modifications that went into Pulman Earthmoving’s ZX140W-5B to make it the only one of its kind in the country. The CablePrice Engineering department designed, fabricated, and installed a special trailer coupling to fit this ZX140W-5B.

"The ability to be able to tow a trailer not only cuts down my cost in moving dirt around—as I don’t have to hire a truck—but also saves me time being able to place all the excavator attachments and other products required for the job into the trailer when moving around the job site," says Dan.

Dan also decided to modify the standard steering to joystick steering. This increases visibility, as there’s no steering wheel while also giving the operator more space in the cab. He also spec’d this ZX140W-5B with a Steelwrist tiltrotator coupler so the digging geometry is endless, as the attachments can tilt and rotate.

The versatility of this machine is enhanced with various systems and functions to deliver an impressive performance on any job site. The increased lifting capacity of the ZX140W-5B is evident when moving heavy loads. Pair this with the auto power boost function and the digging force is also increased.

For Pulman Earthmoving, working on massive projects such as the NCI project on Auckland’s Northern motorway is no small feat. However, with the functions and systems in their new Hitachi ZX140W-5B, the job not only gets easier but has also improved efficiencies.

The ZX140W-5B features the HIOS III hydraulic system. This achieves higher productivity with better fuel consumption which in turn helps to reduce costs. In fact, the HIOS III hydraulic system allows you to achieve lower fuel consumption while operating in PWR mode and an even further reduction is possible in ECO mode.

Furthermore, with the HIOS III boom recirculation system increasing the speed of the arm, meeting deadlines on busy job sites gets easier. CablePrice says that not only does the ZX140W-5B achieve highly favourable cost and fuel-saving results but it also minimises environmental impacts.

It’s equipped with a muffler filter that captures and burns air pollutants, and the variable geometry turbocharger reduces nitrous oxide levels to encourage optimum combustion. All of this while still maintaining a high level of productivity.
