Deals on Wheels follows up on Magnum Equipment’s tool carriers

Usually, by the time a Morooka tracked carrier is required on a job site, things are about to or have already turned pear-shaped. Often this can be the result of unexpected weather or ground conditions but sometimes it can be as simple as a numpty project manager not pre-planning the job correctly.

Alternately, a top planner will see the need for an all-terrain vehicle months in advance and will have one purchased, kitted out and ready for their specific purpose when the time comes to move dirt, trees, drill, or carry equipment and supplies.

Whatever the purpose, a variety of Morooka models are available from New Zealand distributor Magnum Equipment.

"These machines are not huge sellers but fill a specific gap in the marketplace, especially with our changeable Kiwi weather," says Magnum Equipment founder and director Liam Field.

"Their rubber tracks and low ground pressure allow them to work long after the more traditional machines have been parked up and are manoeuvrable enough to get in tight spaces that are too steep for traditional off-road dumpers.

"We cover a few bases with the four models, so customers can choose a carrying capacity of 2.5 to 11 tonnes. We can also supply custom models."

MST200VDR

MST200VDR is the smallest Morooka in the range

The smallest Morooka in the range delivers a 2.5-tonne maximum payload while giving 360 degrees of rotation, backing cameras, durable rubber tracks, HST Drive System, and an economical hydrostatic transmission.

It can be ideal for small urban developments, walking track, or cycleway builds, where space is at a premium.

MST1000VDR

MST1000VDR has a carrying capacity of 5.5T

Filling the mid-range section is the MST1000VDR. Like the larger Morooka machines, this mid-sized model has a generous carrying capacity of 5.5 tonnes, allowing for use on small to medium-sized projects.

With the 360 degrees of tipping and wide tracks like the other Morooka models, ground disturbance is kept to a minimum.

MST1500VDR

MST1500VDR delivers a sizeable 7T load with a 360-degree rotation

This model delivers a sizeable seven-tonne load with a 360-degree rotation, backing cameras, durable rubber tracks, HST Drive System, and an economical hydrostatic transmission. Like all the fully-enclosed cabbed models, it comes with a full air-conditioning system.

The heaviest hitter in Magnum Equipment’s portfolio provides an 11-tonne payload, with 360-degree rotation, backing cameras, durable rubber tracks, HST Drive System, and hydrostatic transmission. This machine is designed to deliver maximum capacity at an economical running cost.

Other applications

Morookas can be used in varying configurations

Morookas are well known worldwide for their adaptability, especially in hard-to-access regions where roads are few and far between. One recent application in the Pacific region for Morooka was a drill rig custom-built by West Auckland engineering business Materials Management & Supplies Ltd.  In this instance, Magnum Equipment supplied an MST800VDL model, which was then fitted with a custom-made drill rig for use in New Caledonia.

Powered by a Cat C4.4 engine rated at 96kW (129hp), the MST800VDL’s 6350kg chassis is designed to carry a maximum of 5440kg at speeds of up to 12km/h and being made for aerial equipment with a vertical reach of up to 15 metres, was well matched for a drill rig.

The decision to go with Morooka as a base unit for the drill rig was primarily down to the tried-and-tested base for drill rigs, of which there are many in operation around the world.

Another reason put forward for choosing Morooka was equipment reliability where back-up and parts availability is scarce.

"There are instances when nothing can be done on a site due to poor weather, but with Morookas, a site can continue on for a good period of time, and then get a site up and going again as soon as the rain stops," says Liam.

"That’s the difference with their versatility. There’s no waiting for the ground to dry out. You can get right back into things."
