Product Feature: Sumitomo excavators

Alpha Equipment says the Sumitomo excavators are cost-effective and smooth to operate

Specialising in earthmoving and associated construction machinery, Alpha Equipment Rental and Sales has quickly established itself as a major force not only in Christchurch, where they are based, but also throughout the South Island.

"The company was founded in 2011 post the Christchurch earthquake," operations manager Dougall Murray says.

"However, it wasn’t long before we started to grow, and with the help of some additional investment we have now become a major force in the one- to 30-tonne construction equipment rental market.

"This has allowed us to reach out beyond our Christchurch base to the point that we are now providing long-term hire, rental, and sales solutions throughout most of the South Island. This includes everything from hiring equipment to dairy farms to major projects such as the on-going redevelopment of the Kaikoura coastal road and rail link."

In order to add Sumitomo excavators to their rental fleet, Alpha Equipment contacted AB Equipment. Dougall was already familiar with the product options as a result of his friendship with AB Equipment sale representative, Nic McLennan.

The initial purchase involved two Sumitomo SH145X-6 machines. The fleet now consists of four Sumitomo SH 145X-6 and two SH235X-6 excavators and a Sakai TW504 roller added in for good measure.

Alpha Equipment says they have had nothing but good feedback on the performance of the Sumitomo excavators from customers. According to Dougall, the Sumitomo machines are cost-effective, smooth to operate, and the zero-tail swing, which was specially requested, offers more versatility on sites where space is at a premium.

"The cab is comfortable and has all the bells and whistles with a unique benefit being the tilt bucket controls on the joystick. Guarding top and front is another additional feature that makes this piece of equipment one of the safest around.

"All up, the Sumitomos have proven to be reliable given the demands associated with hire equipment."

The Sakai TW504 roller has also come through with flying colours. Designed in the US and built in Japan, the Sakai compaction equipment provides the finishing touch to every road construction project, be it major motorway or a private access.

Good compaction is the key ingredient for any successful roading project and Sakai, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of vibratory compaction equipment, has shown it has the products to suit New Zealand conditions and its hire industry.

Something that sets Alpha Equipment Rental and Sales apart from the competition is the fact that they have made a speciality out of renting attachments. They have a wide range of attachments suitable for a variety of applications. Most popular are the hammers and auger drives, which can also be used across a wide range of different construction equipment brands.

Based in Christchurch but with a broad coverage area, customer support is vital to Alpha Equipment. "We may not be AB Equipment’s biggest customer but they make us feel like we are.

"They do a lot of servicing work for us and as a result, we have access to dedicated service technicians. If there are any issues, they deal with them straightaway. We couldn’t ask for anything better. They are big on service and are excellent on communication. All and all, a great bunch of guys to deal with,"

Dougall says. For more details, call 0800 30 30 90 for the location of your nearest nationwide AB Equipment branch.
