A heavy dumping of snow along the Napier-Taupo road saw Deals on Wheels’ Best Eatery on the Road 2016 competition winners swing into action as the ‘go-to’ place for contractors and locals.

The region saw a massive dumping of snow in the area and power supplier Unison reported that they had around seventeen crews replacing over two hundred power poles that were damaged from the excessive weight of the snowfall.

The Rangitaiki Tavern was being used as a base where locals could obtain daily updates and hot food, thanks to the tavern’s independent power supply.

"It’s been pretty cold up here. Yesterday, it was minus six, but the other day we were down to minus eleven," said Rangitaiki co-owner Duncan Claus.

"Things are starting to get back into order, and we’re just starting to get a few supplies in thanks to the contractors."

Power was expected to out for some weeks with the Unison saying that it was looking at providing generators to consumers where required.
