The Alexandra Blossom Festival is reputed to be New Zealand’s longest-running festival beginning back in 1957.

The festival was initiated to celebrate the arrival of spring, and with many events happening, there is a real carnival atmosphere in the town each year at this time. Celebrating its 35th year of involvement in the festival is the Truck Show and Parade.

This year, some 70 trucks lined up at the Alexandra Transport yard on the outskirts of Alexandra for judging prior to the parade through town at midday. Prize giving is rather unique at the Alexandra Truck Show, with the Star of the Show prize awarded prior to the parade, which enables the winner to travel at the front of the cavalcade with a large sign mounted on the grill for the crowd-lined streets to see. The remainder of the prizes are awarded afterwards when the trucks return to the starting point, and a BBQ is put on for all involved.

The weather during the morning was overcast with a forecast of rain later in the day, however, in true Central Otago fashion, the sun appeared in the afternoon to top off an excellent day. This year, the Star of the Show prize winner was Eden Haulage’s superb K200 Kenworth.
