As part of the town's improvements, the NZTA has worked with the community to provide a new lay-by near the public toilets and the Far North District Council has contributed to the diversion of the nearby footpath. Drainage upgrades have been completed and a new traffic island to provide more safety will be constructed at the intersection of Nisbet Street and SH1.

The first section was sealed on Friday and the section from Snowden Avenue to the bridge will be sealed by the end of February.

The next phase of the programme - from Pembroke Street to just south of Plunket Street - will start in early March. Sections of the highway will be repaired and a new chip seal coat laid before a final asphalt surface is laid after Easter and the highway re-marked. The town's pedestrian crossing and island will be removed and a temporary crossing reinstated until the final surface is laid.

"The road layout for the next few weeks could be unfamiliar and we ask everyone using the road – those out driving, cycling or walking - to take extra care for their own safety," says the NZTA's Regional Assets Manager, Steve Mutton.

Mr Mutton says the NZTA's contractor, Fulton Hogan, has hired local people and that is a positive development for the project.

"We are all getting great support from the community during the works and it is making a big contribution towards the excellent progress we are marking," he says.
