Cummins recalls 500k trucks

500k medium- and heavy-duty trucks in the US have been recalled to correct a faulty emissions control system in the engines

Engine-maker Cummins has voluntarily recalled 500k medium- and heavy-duty trucks in the US to correct a faulty emissions control system in the engines, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said earlier in August.

Calling it the largest voluntary recall of trucks, the EPA noted: "The problem Cummins is acting to correct is the result of a defective part and does not involve a defeat device."

The EPA added that the defective emissions control system causes an excessive increase in nitrogen oxide emissions. The trucks recalled are equipped with selective catalytic reduction systems—designed to control nitrogen oxide emissions—that were found to be less durable than required.

Cummins agreed to recall the trucks after the company’s testing validated the results.
