After a successful first outing in 2023, three trucks have been confirmed as contenders for the prestigious title of Truck of the Year Australasia (ToYA) for 2024

The contenders are Volvo Electric Heavy Duty Range, Western Star X Series, and Scania Super. The jury for the ToYA will comprise three associate members of the International Truck of the Year jury:

Tim Giles, editor PowerTorque magazine from Australia; Dave McCoid, editorial director NZ Trucking magazine from New Zealand; and Charleen Clarke, editorial director Focus on Transport magazine in South Africa, along with two independents to critique the decision of the jury: Bob Woodward from Australia and Randolph Covich, Deals on Wheels editor/publisher from New Zealand.

The jury will use their experience to draw out the overall effect of the new vehicle and make a judgement call on the weighting of each segment of the criteria.

They will examine the credentials of the three contenders and hone the list down to a final winner of the award, which will be presented at the New Zealand Trucking Association and National Road Carriers, Transport Maintenance and Safety event in Christchurch in March 2024.

To be considered for the Truck of the Year Australasia, a truck has to solve problems and issues that trucks elsewhere in the world do not have to deal with.

Trucks coming to Australasia have to cope with a different trucking environment to many of their home countries and have to be adapted accordingly. Often, the trucks that are most successful in Australasian markets are those that have been adapted in the best way to make them useful.

When examining the three contenders this year, the judges are looking at a variety of factors, essentially being a need to identify the truck that makes the best contribution to the standards of safety and efficiency of freight transport by road in Australasia.
