Toyota Motor Corporation has announced it has begun sales of the Sora—the first fuel cell bus to receive vehicle type certification in Japan

Toyota says they expect to introduce more than 100 fuel cell buses, mainly within the Tokyo metropolitan area, ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 and anticipates greater awareness of the vehicle type among the general public.

Going along with Toyota’s global corporate initiative to transform the company from an automobile company to a mobility service company, it says the Sora buses will provide users with freedom of mobility and contribute to the improvement and enhancement of customers’ lives and society as a whole.

The Toyota Fuel Cell System (TFCS) has been leveraged in the Sora for its environmental friendliness and ability to serve as a power source in the event of disasters.

It is equipped with a high-capacity external power output device, which can provide high output and a large capacity of electricity supply (9kW maximum output and electricity supply of 235kWh).

The Sora’s seats are automatically folded away when not in use, improving comfort and convenience for passengers, with eight high-definition cameras fitted inside and outside to detect pedestrians and cyclists around the bus by providing a field of vision supplemented by an audio notification system.

As the bus is not operated by a traditional powered engine, there is no gear shifting, resulting in minimal lurching, with an automatic control function helping provide smooth acceleration from complete stops.
