Comment: Surviving tough times

The value of New Zealand Trucking Association membership

This year will go down in history as one that many in the trucking industry would like to forget due to the turmoil caused by the COVID-19 virus. The downstream effects of the Level 4 lockdown on the New Zealand economy will be felt by many businesses for a long time.

A significant number of these businesses will not survive in the long term, especially those that work in the tourism, retail, and hospitality sectors. This will affect the trucking industry that services these struggling businesses, with a significant downturn in workload.

On the flip side, other parts of New Zealand economy will go through a period of significant growth that’s supported by government initiatives, especially the infrastructure and construction industries. This will provide an opportunity for those in the trucking industry who can quickly adapt their businesses models to take advantage of the changing situation.

Now more than ever is the time to belong to the New Zealand Trucking Association, as we can help you navigate your way through these changing times with sound industry-based advice, cost modelling, significant industry experience, compliance, advocacy, tools and resources, networking opportunities, and substantial cost savings.

New Zealand Trucking Association has been sitting at the heart of the trucking industry since 1988, representing members at every level within business and the wider community, from community groups, industry sector groups, road safety forums, industry training, government agencies, local and regional government, industry partners and suppliers.

From the very beginning, our goal has been to benefit trucking operators and to find ways of improving the life of those who chose to earn their living with a vehicle or run a fleet of vehicles for their business.

With the trucking industry being such a heavily regulated industry, it pays to be a member of New Zealand Trucking Association. Members are seen by the wider community as trusted industry professionals. If you operate in the trucking industry, then it’s in your long-term financial interest to belong to the association.

We are a sounding board for members who are going through tough times and need to restructure. Equally, we assist members who want to discuss a new business idea or if they are expanding their business. The coffee is always on and we’re always available.

Having had extensive experience within the trucking industry, we can crunch the numbers on a business proposal and advise the member if the contract that they are looking at is viable. One of our membership services is we prepare a business cost model.

Years of trucking industry experience has gone into building a cost model that financial institutions trust. It’s not just about putting numbers into a programme; anyone can do that. It’s about using that industry knowledge to include all the things that are not accounted for.

This document is invaluable and can be used as an independent resource when applying for finance. This service is free to association members. Our association offers valuable industry networking opportunities.

Who you know matters, and our association is filled with potential contacts, clients and partners who can help your business move to the next level. Association members can build long-term relationships and partnerships that are mutually beneficial.

We provide a forum for like-minded individuals to come together to share ideas, strengthen ties, find new business, and make connections that would not be possible without the association.

We actively create business to business opportunities for our members, key partners, and suppliers. Holding events and participating in networking events keeps us on the ball, including the bi-annual Trucking Industry Show, Trucking Industry Summit, Safety MAN Road Safety Truck, conferences, and seminars.

We’re an industry centre of influence that you cannot afford to overlook. Our members trust our recommendations. Members of the association get immediate access to any news or developments that affect their business and the trucking industry.

Outside of the usual communication of members to each other, we provide regular newsletters, e-mail, and social media updates and information resources that help our members stay on top of recent industry developments.

The fast pace of technology and market competition means that everything is constantly changing and updating. It’s important that you can take advantage of this information to improve your business.

Not only do members have access to information about changes in the industry, they can also play a role in developing these changes. The association provides a forum for members to share ideas and new ways to improve the industry.

This allows opportunities for more experienced members to help newer ones grow and provides the opportunity for all members to share innovative ideas that can help their business.

One of the key benefits of joining the New Zealand Trucking Association is the opportunity to support the association and its membership to help influence government legislation that affects the trucking industry.

The combined resources of the association members can be used to help lobby government decision-makers and to help sway public opinion more positively towards the goals of the industry. With the ever-increasing level of industry regulation, this is an absolute necessity for industry survival.
