Fifty years of Hilux sales in NZ, and now a battery-electric version. Here's what the new Hilux BEV brings to the table.
Toyota New Zealand has introduced the first battery-electric version of its Hilux ute, marking a significant development for one of the country’s most established commercial vehicle nameplates.
Launched alongside the new-generation 2026 Hilux range, the Hilux BEV arrives as Toyota celebrates 50 years of Hilux sales in New Zealand. While diesel and mild-hybrid variants remain central to the line-up, the electric model offers an alternative for operators whose daily work patterns suit battery-electric technology.
The Hilux BEV is powered by dual electric motors driving all four wheels, producing a combined 144kW. Toyota quotes a driving range of 315km under the NEDC test cycle and a braked towing capacity of 2000kg. The vehicle is aimed primarily at fleet, municipal and business users who can return to a depot or charging point at the end of each day.
Available in SR and SR5 configurations, the BEV shares many of the updates introduced across the wider Hilux range, including revised suspension tuning, electric power steering and a redesigned cabin featuring larger digital displays and updated connectivity features.
The electric Hilux has also received a five-star ANCAP safety rating, matching the diesel variants.
For many rural and heavy-duty applications, diesel power is likely to remain the preferred option, particularly where long distances, remote locations and towing demands are common. However, the Hilux BEV represents Toyota’s first step in bringing electric power to one of New Zealand’s most widely used utility vehicles.
