MSC-supplied Terex EvoQuip crusher and scalping screen are being put to use on a Cook Islands Government project
Nestled in the heart of the Pacific, the stunning atoll of Manihiki — 1203km northwest of Rarotonga — has long been an island paradise known only to the most adventurous travellers.
However, it will soon be much easier for visitors to experience Manihiki’s pristine beaches and crystal-clear lagoons. The Cook Islands Government has launched a project to upgrade the island’s airport runway, allowing for larger and more frequent flights, and opening up the Pa Enua (Outer Islands) like never before.
In early 2023, Infrastructure Cook Islands (ICI) initiated a search for crushing and screening machinery to support the airport project. Due to Manihiki’s remote location, the equipment needed to be reliable, mobile, compact, and powerful enough to get the job done. With any challenging operational environment, ease of use and maintenance were just as important.
After a comprehensive tender process, ICI selected the Terex EvoQuip Cobra 230R impact crusher and Colt 1000 scalping screen, both supplied by Mobile Screening & Crushing NZ (MSC).
MSC also factored in the unique logistical challenges, from international shipping and safely unloading the equipment at a smaller port to the essential spare and wear parts needed for such a remote location.
With 30 years of industry experience, MSC provided recommendations tailored to the project’s requirements.
“This project represents a significant investment for the Cook Islands Government, so it was critical we supplied the right machinery,” says Dan Meikle, MSC general manager.
“After seven years selling Terex EvoQuip products, we have absolute confidence these machines will perform exceptionally.”
The 230R impact crusher will be crushing a mix of limestone coral and combined with the screener, will be producing three products for the project.
Known for its compact yet durable design, the Cobra impact crusher has a processing capacity of up to 230tph and can work in a large range of applications.
The Colt 1000 scalping screen will be working in sequence with the impact crusher to screen the coral to the required product specifications for the runway. It has an acceleration of 6G and combined screen angling and a 13.5ft x 4ft (4.11m x 1.22m) screenbox. The machine has a throughput of up to 360tph and can screen fine, wet, and sticky products.
In October, Dan travelled to Rarotonga to train ICI’s civil works team on operating and maintaining the EvoQuip equipment.
“MSC looks forward to returning early next year to commission the machines upon their arrival on Manihiki Island and is proud to contribute to this transformational project in such a stunning location,” says Dan.
MSC says they have in-stock specials on the Cobra 290R impact crusher and Colt 1600 scalping screen, both next models up from the equipment supplied to the Cook Islands. Free demos can be arranged and flexible finance details are available on the stock units.
