Morooka tracked dumpers hire

Morooka tracked dumpers form an integral part of the large Magnum Hire rental fleet and Deals on Wheels went to find out how they are helping out on job sites

Since Magnum Equipment obtained the New Zealand distributorship for Morooka tracked carriers from its Japanese manufacturers in 2018, the business has steadily introduced a varied-size selection of the brand to the local market.

Along with selling Morookas in different configurations for specialised applications, the company has been steadily growing an enviable fleet for its Magnum Hire sibling business, with all the units having been set up for onsite tipper work.

A lot of contractors and developers have found a sweet spot for the tracked dumpers, with the vehicles finding favour on tight access sites or the hillside slopes that are getting developed these days. Of course, you’re also likely to see a Morooka making its way through a muddy bog at the bottom of a hill if it means work can be undertaken easier and safer than other methods; their low-ground pressure often helping reduce environmental damage significantly.

While tracked dumpers can be found on the stock lists of other hire companies, Magnum Hire naturally has a specific focus on the Morooka brand, which is considered a top-end selection.

“The hire division has just under 20 units now, so Morookas have found a nice spot in the market,” says company founder and director Liam Field. “They are specialised pieces of machinery, so a lot of hire companies don’t keep them in their own fleets – although they will often obtain them through us for their clients.”

Size-wise, Magnum Hire’s Morookas come in a variety of options, so it is not unusual to see them working on small urban sites, moving spoil out or materials around multi-unit developments or other areas that are too tight for other types of onsite dumpers. Similarly, commercial buildings or subdivisions are likely to play host to the larger models, some of which have a carrying capacity of up to 11 tonnes.

According to Liam, it is not uncommon to see Magnum Hire’s Morookas on-site throughout the North Island, although the upper half of the country is where any machinery fan is more likely to spot one at work.

“We are Auckland-based, but we can supply anywhere throughout the country, if necessary,” says Liam. “We have service agents located all over the place, so there is no issue where a job is located if it makes economic sense.”

Knowing that Magnum Hire is happy to send Morookas to jobs outside the Auckland and Waikato regions should enable managers in other areas to put consideration into how the machines can benefit awkward sites they are pricing or currently working on.

“Some people think that the Morookas are only suitable for wet weather operations – which is where they really excel – but our hire fleet is also kept busy over the summer period,” says Liam. “With their 360-degree swivel capability and ability to traverse terrain that is too dangerous for wheeled dumpers, safety-conscious site managers should specify a Morooka every time – especially if they want to minimise environmental damage.”

Durability is one key aspect of Morookas that has kept the brand relevant over the many years it has been available, but going along with that is the continual upgrading of the models to ensure they stay relevant for owners and operators.

“None of our machines are very old and so operators get all the technology that comes with each model,” says Liam. “For the cabbed versions, they have a full suite of features, along with visibility through large windows and safety cameras to cover any blind spots.

“The low noise output from the machines also allows for less fatigue for the operator and a quieter and safer worksite.”
