Product feature: Hidromek HMK compactors

For anyone prepping for the earthworks season ahead, Magnum Equipment has two drum compactors in stock that are worth looking at

With winter upon us and the usual seasonal slowdown affecting many job sites, forward-planning business owners will already have equipment in their workshops undergoing annual checks and refurbishments.

Going along with that will be others who after a quick trip to a sunny island for some rest and recreation will use the downtime to shop around for new or replacement equipment, helping ensure their fleet is ready for action once ground conditions dry up.

It’s here that New Zealand Hidromek distributor Magnum Equipment is in the position to show those looking for new drum compactors a couple of good deals, both of which are currently available in stock.

Regularly seen pieces on construction sites around the top half of the country and available as a smooth drum unit with bolt-on pads, the Hidromek HMK 110 CS H4 and HMK 130 CS H4 models weigh in at 11 and 13 tonnes respectively (exclusive of pads).

Manufactured with safety front and foremost, both models are powered by a Deutz TCD4.1 L4 turbocharged diesel engine rated at 169hp(115kW)@2200rpm and feature an all-wheel-drive system that can be disengaged when not required.

“The machines are easily transported and operated,” says Magnum Equipment founder and director Liam Field. “They have been a fixture on jobs for over the last six years and in that time have shown their solid build quality is superior to many other brands on the market.”

Keeping it upright

The design of each model is similar, except for the heavier drum and sturdier cradle plates on the larger 13-tonne machine. Hidromek says the low centre of gravity provides operators with good stability and greater manoeuvrability (obviously) and can be especially handy when working on sloping ground or road cambers.

“It’s not that uncommon to see poorly designed compactors on their sides, due to their articulation and the terrain they operate on,” says Liam. “Owners often use them as the first step for new operators, so Hidromek has included features to ensure the machines are safe to use and there is as much on-board driver assistance as possible.”

Ensuring the machine stays safe and upright is Hidromek’s inclinometer, which utilises a sensor to measure the immediate work area and delivers visual and audible alarms to the operator depending on the slope values. This ensures the machine can work to its capacity while keeping within a 12% to 15% maximum slope. If the machine exceeds the top margin, as well as notifying the operator through the alarm system, a vibration shutdown will occur.

Wide windscreens and a sloping rear bonnet help provide maximum visibility and reversing safely is enhanced with a
rear-facing camera.

The cab interior features drop-down shades to reduce sun strike and what can only be described as a comfortable ergonomic workstation ensures the operator has all the controls and switches within easy reach.

A large monitor displays the usual system information, along with current slope and compaction values, while doubling as a reversing screen. The display values on the monitor can be customised according to the operator’s requirements.

The numerous air vents that pepper the interior of the cab are ideal for keeping the cab warm and windscreens clear in winter and cool in summer.

“Some of the best feedback we get from operators is the quality of the air-conditioning system,” says Liam. “I’ve had a lot of them tell me that that it’s the most comfortable environment they’ve worked in.”

Servicing and maintenance

For the workshop staff who need to carry out maintenance, Hidromek has provided a hydraulically opening bonnet and ensured access to filters along with other routine tasks can be carried out from ground level.

“There are a large number of Hidromeks in the country now, so we stock a wide range of parts and consumables,” says Liam.

“We also have a close working relationship with the Hidromek distributor in Australia, so if an orphan part is required, there’s no long wait for something to come from all the way from Europe.”

In stock now

Liam says buyers looking to add a drum compactor to their fleet, the two in stock at Magnum Equipment are ready for immediate work.

“Any business looking for a top-quality unit that will allow operators to do long stints safely and in a comfortable environment, can contact either Luke or me, and we can show them the benefits of adding a Hidromek drum compactor to their fleet.”
