Boss Attachments unveiled new additions to its forestry attachments range at the recent CCNZ conference and they’re quickly proving to be popular among NZ contractors
OSA LIV-20 tree shear
Among the new offerings is the OSA LIV-20 tree shear, purchased by Ricky Kuru of Gisborne-based Kuru Contracting Limited.
“We’re absolutely amazed at the power and operational speed of the LIV-20,” says Ricky.
“We have it mounted on a CAT325 and the hassle-free production levels that it’s achieving have been a real eye-opener for us.”
Kuru Contracting is a major East Coast contractor with extensive involvement in the civil, logistics, heavy haulage, and forestry sectors. The company purchased their LIV-20 to assist in their Cyclone Gabrielle clean-up operation and they say it has already replaced a far more expensive and less productive wood processing head.
“This OSA LIV tree shear is saving us thousands, and we’ve already purchased another two,” Ricky says. The OSA LIV tree shear range has been designed and manufactured for the Australasian market, and Boss Attachments says it has made a major impact in the harvesting of tough Aussie Ironbark-type hardwoods.
Some of the features include:
- Made entirely of Hardox and Weldex and delivers cutting and splitting forces
- Cutting jaw blade and piercing tips are machined to shape from a single piece of high-tensile Hardox wear plate for extended maintenance-free service intervals
- 1000mm jaw opening on LIV 20 model
- Fully protected OSA cylinder to provide unparalleled cutting force
- Piercing tips for optimum performance in downsizing and splitting of oversized logs
- Models to suit 14- to 30-tonne excavators
- Dymax tree shears
“We also introduced the latest high-performance Dymax HPX tree shear at the CCNZ conference,” says Paul Herbison of Boss Attachments.
“In plantation thinning operations of acacia and eucalyptus, these Dymax shears can average between 100 to 180 trees per hour cutting rates and produce more volume of wood than competing models. Cutting rates are subject to tree spacing and operator skill.”
The Dymax HPX tree shear features replaceable high-strength, abrasion-resistant steel cutting knives and dual grapple arms that secure the tree prior to shearing.
Options include a bunching arm, tilt or rotator, a custom-build gatherer that cuts multiple stems in specific operations, and a hydraulic tilt rotator that provides side-to-side tilt allowing operators to adjust to the tree trunk or limb when working on uneven ground.
Dymax tree shears come in a range of 250mm to 600mm cut sizes and they are suitable for use with a wide range of excavators or skid steers.
“The two tree shear brands are absolute leaders in their fields, and as Ricky commented, they can provide contractors with increased production and reduced operating costs,” says Paul.
