The JAC T9 PHEV ute was unveiled at Fieldays 2026 and is already raising some eyebrows with its sharp price and impressive towing capacity
The New Zealand ute market has gained another entrant with the launch of the JAC T9 PHEV, a plug-in hybrid version of the Chinese manufacturer’s T9 dual-cab ute.
Unveiled at Fieldays 2026, the vehicle enters a growing segment that now includes electrified competitors such as the BYD Shark 6, GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV and Ford Ranger PHEV.
The arrival of the T9 PHEV reflects a broader shift occurring within the utility vehicle sector. While diesel-powered utes continue to dominate sales in New Zealand, manufacturers are increasingly introducing hybrid and plug-in hybrid alternatives in response to tightening emissions requirements and changing customer expectations. The challenge for these vehicles is balancing lower fuel consumption and electric driving capability with the towing, payload and off-road requirements traditionally associated with the ute market.

JAC first gave New Zealand audiences a look at the T9 PHEV during Fieldays 2025, displaying a prototype and gathering public feedback before commencing local testing. Over the past year, the company has undertaken New Zealand-based evaluation programmes alongside development work conducted in Australia. Testing reportedly included towing, load carrying and operation on a variety of road surfaces and conditions.
The production model combines a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine with two electric motors and a dedicated hybrid transmission. Unlike conventional diesel-electric systems, the T9 PHEV uses a petrol-electric powertrain capable of operating in electric-only mode for shorter trips while retaining the ability to travel longer distances using both energy sources.
JAC claims a combined power output of 360kW and 674Nm of torque, figures that place it among the more powerful vehicles currently available in New Zealand’s ute sector. The company also quotes an electric-only driving range of up to 100 kilometres under NEDC testing and a hybrid range of more than 1000 kilometres. As with all manufacturer figures, real-world results will vary depending on driving conditions, payload, towing demands and charging habits.

Practical capability remains central to the vehicle’s positioning. The T9 PHEV is rated to tow up to 3500kg braked and carries a claimed payload of 915kg. These figures place it within the range expected by many commercial and recreational ute buyers, although real-world performance under heavy towing loads will be closely watched as customer deliveries begin.
Pricing is likely to be one of the vehicle’s most significant talking points. JAC announced a launch price of $59,990 plus on-road costs, positioning the T9 PHEV at the lower end of the plug-in hybrid ute market. This places it within reach of buyers considering both traditional diesel utes and newer electrified alternatives.
The launch also highlights how rapidly the ute market is changing. For decades, diesel engines have been the default choice for contractors, tradespeople, farmers and fleet operators. However, the emergence of plug-in hybrid technology offers an alternative pathway for buyers who require towing and carrying capability but wish to reduce fuel consumption during day-to-day use. Whether the technology proves attractive in large numbers will depend on factors such as purchase price, charging access, reliability and long-term ownership costs.

Questions remain around how plug-in hybrid utes will perform in demanding commercial applications. Industry observers have noted that while PHEVs can deliver impressive laboratory efficiency figures, benefits are often dependent on regular charging and usage patterns that maximise electric operation. In sectors where vehicles spend long periods towing or travelling extended distances, fuel savings may be less pronounced. Some commentators have also raised concerns about the added mechanical complexity of combining internal combustion and electric drivetrains.
For JAC, the T9 PHEV represents an opportunity to build on the presence established by the diesel T9, which was introduced to New Zealand in 2025. For the wider industry, its arrival is another indication that electrification is moving beyond passenger vehicles and into sectors traditionally dominated by diesel power.
As customer deliveries begin later this year, the T9 PHEV will provide a useful test of how New Zealand buyers respond to plug-in hybrid technology in one of the country’s most competitive vehicle categories. Its success or otherwise may offer further insight into the direction of the local ute market over the remainder of the decade.
