Komatsu’s new 20-tonne series excavator, the PC220LCi-12, is landing in NZ, the first in a new generation of machines
The machine also debuts iMC 3.0, representing the next evolution of Komatsu’s market-leading automation and enhanced assistive technologies that allows for safer operation of the machine.
Mark Boyes, Komatsu’s national business manager for construction, says the PC220LCi-12 reflects years of development and extensive customer feedback.
“Good things come to those who wait, and this redesign has been many years in the making,” he says. “Our customers have been at the centre of our engineering and design decisions for this latest model, particularly when it comes to improvements to the cab. As with everything at Komatsu, the focus has been on quality, and this machine certainly delivers on that.”
A step up in performance

Right: Improved control of work equipment and safety enhancements make operation simpler
The PC220LCi-12 is designed to deliver a clear step up in capability, with multiple systems reengineered to boost output and encourage safer operations on site. Mark says it delivers a real step change in performance.
“With an upgraded chassis control system, a new high-output four-cylinder engine, redesigned cylinders and a smarter electronic hydraulic system, operators can achieve up to 18% more productivity overall compared to the previous model. The new Power Plus mode on the model means 7% greater lifting capacity, 10% more force, 7% more digging force and an 18% increase in workload.”
The PC220LCi-12 also features a 15% increase in boom, arm and cylinder size for more breakout force and performance.
Fuel efficiency that delivers

Alongside enhanced performance, the PC220LCi-12 also promises significant savings across fuel, fluids and servicing.
“We know cost of ownership is critical for our customers. The PC220LCi-12 cuts maintenance costs by up to 20% compared to the previous model thanks increase in fuel efficiency and an extension of DPF life to 9,000 hours. Routine servicing is simplified too, with more checks safely completed from the ground,” Mark says.
A new level of comfort

Komatsu has focused on operator wellbeing in the new design, ensuring the machine is as comfortable as it is capable.
“The PC220LCi-12 features a completely reengineered cab with a 30% increase in legroom, improved ergonomics, enhanced visibility and a more intuitive user interface. Combined with redesigned hydraulics, engine and control systems, the excavator delivers higher levels of comfort, precision and performance,” Mark says.
The PC220LCi-12 is suited for a variety of civil applications, and Mark says it’s a competitive addition to Komatsu’s growing fleet of smarter, safer and more efficient machines.
“We’ve incorporated a whole host of new technologies that make it very safe to operate, so the list of potential applications is limitless. Its combination of power, precision and safer application makes the PC200LCi-12 adaptable to different site requirements while reducing reliance on traditional construction methods.”
Intelligent Machine Control 3.0

One of the new technologies on the PC22OLCi-12 is Intelligent Machine Control 3.0 (iMC 3.0), which expands on Komatsu’s leading automation platform by adding industry-first features to improve productivity.
“The industry is calling for more automation. With iMC 3.0, we’ve taken automation further by introducing new safety features such as 3D boundary control. This makes operation easier, safer and more efficient, especially at a time when skilled operators are in short supply,” Mark says.
3D boundary control (geofencing): Prevents the machine from moving into restricted areas, offering a major step forward from the 2D functionality available in base models.
Enhanced in-field design tools: Operators can create designs directly on site, streamlining workflow without relying solely on external data.
Automation upgrades: Improved control of work equipment and safety enhancements make operation simpler, more precise and more consistent – helping address the growing skill gap in the industry.
Built for the toughest New Zealand construction sites

From urban sites with tight space limits to remote projects where reliability is everything, the Komatsu PC220LCi-12 has been engineered with New Zealand contractors in mind.
Its pressurised, dust-sealed cabs and low-noise engines support compliance in sensitive environments, while advanced safety features like ROPS protection and geofencing give operators confidence on diverse, harsh terrain. Together, these innovations ensure that New Zealand’s contractors can take on more complex projects with greater precision, safety and efficiency.
