The Transport Well New Zealand Charitable Trust

Transport Well, a new independent trust backed by NTA, launches to lift safety and performance in NZ’s transport sector

The New Zealand transport and logistics sector stands at a crossroads. Long burdened by workforce shortages, a grim safety record, and ongoing struggles for fair rates, the sector has often lacked a unified, independent platform to address its deep-rooted challenges. That’s why the establishment of Transport Well, a new charitable trust, is such a significant step forward.

Spearheaded by the New Zealand Trucking Association (NTA), Transport Well is more than just a charity – it’s a transformational initiative built to support a whole-of-industry approach to safety, wellbeing, and productivity. Its formation reflects a bold vision: for industry to take care of itself, with transparent, independent leadership and sector-wide collaboration.

Why the Industry Needs a Reset

For years, transport and logistics has faced mounting problems. WorkSafe New Zealand has named it one of the most dangerous industries to work in, with high rates of workplace injuries and fatalities. At the same time, there’s a widespread perception that the race to the bottom continues – with cutthroat pricing, low margins, and minimal emphasis on driver competency or training.

No disrespect to our older, professional drivers – many of whom have been the backbone of the industry – but the fact is, there are operators hiring anyone with a licence and putting them behind the wheel. That’s simply not good enough.
Efforts to drive change have been stifled by division. New Zealand has three main industry associations, yet they represent only a fraction of all transport operators. Their failure to consistently collaborate means that innovative programmes struggle to get off the ground – particularly when government support hinges on consensus.

To break through this deadlock, NTA has taken a decisive step by championing Transport Well, establishing it as a charitable trust, separate from industry politics. The trust will provide a platform where all operators – regardless of size, membership, or association – can access tools and support to improve health, safety, and operational performance.

Transport Well Charity is independent, transparent and impactful. An independent board is currently being assembled to govern the trust, ensuring full transparency and integrity. One of the trust’s first major initiatives is the rollout of TruckSafe New Zealand – a structured, independently audited Safety Management System designed specifically for the New Zealand context.

Unlike past attempts at government-run programmes, which often fell short of being practical or scalable, TruckSafe is designed by industry, for industry. It acknowledges the realities of running a transport business, while lifting standards and promoting best practice.

TruckSafe will help good companies get even better. TruckSafe is not about starting from scratch. In fact, most responsible operators already have many of the processes and systems in place that the programme requires. What TruckSafe does is help them bring it all together in a streamlined, structured way that supports compliance, consistency, and continuous improvement.

For those flying by the seat of their pants, TruckSafe provides a clear roadmap to transform operations. It includes templates, procedures, and step-by-step guidance to help operators establish a robust safety management system – one that works for the long haul.

Importantly, once a company reaches the TruckSafe standard, it is independently audited to validate compliance. This gives peace of mind to customers, regulators, and the companies themselves. With third-party verification, there’s no grey area – only proof that a business is doing the right thing.

As adoption of TruckSafe grows, it is expected to deliver far-reaching benefits. Operators will run more efficiently, employees will be better protected, and there will be less duplication of induction processes as manufacturers and logistics partners become familiar with the standard.

In time, TruckSafe certification is likely to become a prerequisite for tenders and contracts, just as it is in comparable overseas systems. That’s why the time to act is now. Getting certified isn’t something that happens overnight – it takes time, planning, and commitment.

Transport Well and TruckSafe are about more than ticking boxes. They represent a genuine opportunity to lift the bar and restore pride in an industry that plays a vital role in New Zealand’s economy and communities.

Transport Well sends a powerful message that this industry is ready to take responsibility for its people, its standards, and its future.
