CCNZ Hawke’s Bay East Coast Awards honour top civil construction projects, cyclone recovery work, and standout industry contributors across the region
Civil construction achievements from across Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast have been recognised at the recently held Civil Contractors New Zealand Hawke’s Bay East Coast Branch Construction Awards.
More than 240 people attended the event at Toitoi Events Centre, which highlighted the sector’s role in restoring essential infrastructure following Cyclone Gabrielle.
Fulton Hogan received the Supreme Award for its Kererū Gorge Culvert project, an emergency rebuild that reinstated a key access route severely damaged by the cyclone. The team installed a 15-metre-wide arch culvert over four months in remote terrain, also earning the award for projects valued over $10 million. Judges cited the project’s technical demands and effective coordination.
Cyclone recovery work featured prominently among this year’s winners. Quality Roading and Services was recognised for stabilising a 12-metre-high slope on Mangapoike Road, a project valued between $1 million and $3 million. Earthwork Solutions received the $3 million to $10 million category for its contribution to the Waipaoa Stopbanks Project, aimed at improving long-term flood protection around Gisborne.
Other awards acknowledged a range of local contributions, including AMC Contracting’s renewal of paving around Hastings’ Civic Square and Galbraith Earthmovers’ weekend stormwater upgrade beneath the Palmerston North–Napier rail line. Individual honours went to Doug Cushing of Fulton Hogan and trainee Pierce Ward of Tūpore Infrastructure, while Marcus Ingram won the regional excavator operator title. Branch chair Mike Wilson said the awards reflected the region’s sustained recovery efforts and strong collaboration.
