The New Zealand Road Transport Forum has won some changes to the Approved Code of Practices for Cranes.

The draft proposed that only equipment inspectors could carry out annual inspections. This was altered to allow "compentent persons" who have acquired the skills and knowledge required through a combination of knowledge, qualifications and experience to carry out inspections.

The Forum advises that while this will produce cost savings, inspections must be carried out by a person who has been adequately trained.

The draft code also called for a range of safety devices beyond OEM specifications. The Forum got changes through that will mean most equipment should not need these additional devices.
